THE RED FLOWER CAMPAIGN, DIGNITY FOR INCARCERATED WOMEN

Menstrual periods are like natural demands on the woman’s body on a regular basis, one she has no jurisdiction over, save much preparedness psychologically, and facilities wise. Indeed it is a delicate period that requires comfort- from the availability of basic sanitation needed to go through it safe and clean, to a well frame of mind for work and other activities. For most women in Sub Saharan Africa however, the unavailability of basic facilities such as water, sanitary towels, and toilets is their normal.  Adolescent girls and women who are incapable of acquiring these materials are deprived of many hours of school, and profitable work times, respectively. The situation gets even worrying at the prisons where there are time restrictions, lack of facilities and overcrowded spaces. The issues of menstrual hygiene in these parts pose a threat on the human rights of the average woman because menstrual hygiene is a necessity for females the world over, and women of all groups deserve to be well during that time of the month.

Recognizing this issue of menstrual poverty especially among women in prison, the Youth Bridge Foundation Zambia has launched the ‘Red Flower campaign’ which aims to donate reusable sanitary towels for female inmates at Mukobeko maximum prison. Just like a beautiful flower, the menstrual experience for these women must be a graceful and dignifying experience. One that will not pose discomfort, but a pleasing appreciation for their bodies even in a place where they would not ordinarily feel comfortable.

To raise funds and resources for the campaign, the foundation has rolled out some activities including the ‘Outdoor movie night with mom’ on Mother’s day, 9th May 2021 and a series of fundraising dinner. The movie night afforded individuals the opportunity to celebrate their mothers with a twist to it-celebrating and contributing to menstrual hygiene in Zambia.

The first of the dinners, a partnership between the foundation and the Piatto restaurant, dubbed ‘eat and drink for a cause’ was held over the weekend with two others scheduled for the rest of the weekends in the month of May ahead of Menstrual Hygiene day on 28th May 2021. On each of these dinner events guests will buy with significant discounts and dine amidst live band.

The proceeds from these events will go into financing the Red Flower campaign.

Menstrual hygiene day is an internationally recognized day by the United Nations to create awareness on menstrual hygiene and its effects on women and girls potential. This year it will be commemorated on Friday May 28 2021, with the theme- “Action and Investment in Menstrual Hygiene and Health.” The Red Flower campaign seeks to celebrate this day by ensuring incarcerated women stay healthy and clean during menstruation.
