Investing In Ghana’s Human Capital – Tullow Prepares 1,478 Students for BECE 2021

Leading oil and gas giant, Tullow Oil Limited has directly supported 1,478 final year Junior High School (JHS) students in the Western Region of Ghana as part of efforts to prepare them adequately for the 2021 Basic Education Certificate Examinations (BECE).

The support is one of many interventions under its ‘Educate to Innovate with STEM Project in six (6) coastal districts of the Western Region namely Shama, STMA, Ahanta West, Nzema East, Ellembele, and Jomoro. The project which initially served 21 JHS and 10 SHS has been expanded to cover 25 JHS and 11 SHS in its new phase.

Through its implementing partners, Youth Bridge Foundation, students have received mentorships sessions, practical STEM clinics and standardized orientation on the BECE; common mistakes to avoid during examinations; good examination practices. These sessions were facilitated by project beneficiaries in SHS and tertiary institutions, Ghana Education Service (GES) and WAEC Examination Officers, Metropolitan Exam Coordinator, Western Regional Science, Technology, Mathematics, Innovation and Engineering (STMIE) Coordinators and the Public Relations Officer of the Ahanta West Education Directorate.

Additionally, about 1200 candidates beyond the project’s geographical scope had the opportunity to virtually listen to GES Examination Officers on the ‘Tullow STEM Radio School’ – an after-school learning support birthed out of the impact of COVID-19 on education.

The Educate to Innovate with STEM Project is one of Tullow’s STEM initiatives aimed at improving the interest and performance of students at the JHS and Senior High School levels in STEM.
